The pre-1987 Volkswagen EV 1.8 8v GTI engine, rebuilt by Type 19 to factory specification. Suitable for Mk1 Golf GTI or early Mk2 Golf GTI fitment. Every component is replaced with OEM manufacturer parts, all mating surfaces machined, the original bore retained — producing an engine as close to factory as is possible.

Block work

  • Acid dipped and powder coated in crinkle black
  • All mating surfaces machined
  • New Mahle main, thrust and rod bearings

  • Bores honed to OEM specification

Cylinder head

  • Valve faces and surfaces skimmed
  • New Febi hydraulic tappets where applicable

Lead time & core surcharge

Builds take 8 to 12 weeks from order confirmation. A £450 core surcharge is included in the listed price and refunded in full upon receipt of a rebuildable core.

What we do to every engine.

Core stripped entirely. Measurements taken. Every component inspected for suitability before reuse or replacement. Items marked (option) are available as upgrades on request — see "Optional upgrades" below.
