Questions, answered
How is this different from the Master Parts Catalogue?
The parts catalogues are cut by car — everything fitted to a Mk2 Golf, engine to tailgate. An engine reference is cut the other way: one engine family, followed across every platform it was fitted to, with the ancillaries, looms and torque figures that belong to it. If you are restoring a car, buy the catalogue. If you are building or swapping an engine, buy this.
Are the torque figures included, or do I need the torque book as well?
They are included, in the same book, as a full section. The figure printed on the cover is the number of torque specifications inside it — for example the R32 reference carries 335. One exception is stated openly in the 16V book: the ABF appears throughout the parts sections, but its torque corpus is not yet published, so ABF torque figures are not in there.
Will this help me plan an engine swap?
That is what it was built for. Because the book follows one engine across several platforms, you can see where the part numbers agree and where they diverge between, say, a Mk4 and a Mk5 R32, or a Mk3 and a Mk4 TDI. The 4Motion driveline is carried in the R32 reference for the same reason — an R32 swap is a driveline swap.
Where does the data come from?
The factory parts catalogue data and the factory workshop manual — the same sources the dealer network used. Not forum threads, not a scan that dies when someone stops paying for a server.
