Mk2 Golf Inner Sill Reinforcement Panel

The inner sill reinforcement panel — part 5A in the ETKA diagram — is the stamped steel brace that sits inside the lower sill member of the Mk2 Golf and Mk2 Jetta. It stiffens the sill box section where the floor meets the rocker, exactly where water traps, rust takes hold, and MOT testers probe. VW part number 191 809 637 has been off the shelves for years. We reproduce it in-house from 1.2mm mild steel pressed to the original profile.

Where it lives and why it rots

The reinforcement sits horizontally inside the lower sill cavity, sandwiched between the inner and outer sill skins. Water ingress from the door seal channel and failed underbody seam sealer pools here. The pressed-in oval apertures are factory drain points — but after decades of use they block with mud and debris, turning the cavity into a rust incubator. By the time the outer sill shows blistering paint, the reinforcement is often completely consumed.

Installation notes

Access via the sill cavity after removing the inner sill closing panel (191 803 225 / 191 803 226). Clean back to bare metal, treat with zinc weld-through primer, plug or MIG weld in to the original spot weld positions. Dress, prime, and seam-seal before refitting the closing panel.
